Analytics tells you where shoppers leave your checkout. It almost never tells you why. For D2C brands growing beyond metros, the "why" is often surprising.
Here are nine problems that come up again and again when real shoppers from Tier-2 and Tier-3 India try to buy on their own phones.
1. The page is too heavy for their phone and network
A budget Android phone on patchy mobile data is very different from an office laptop. Slow images, pop-ups and heavy scripts make checkout feel broken.
2. COD is hidden or costs extra without warning
Many first-time buyers want cash on delivery. If it only appears at the last step — or a surprise COD fee appears — they leave.
3. Too many form fields
Every extra field is another chance to give up. Asking for an email address from someone who mainly uses WhatsApp creates friction.
4. Address fields don't fit how people write addresses
"Near Hanuman Mandir, behind the post office" is a real address. Strict formats and pincode errors frustrate genuine buyers.
5. OTP problems
OTPs that arrive late, auto-fill that doesn't work, or no clear "resend" option cause many silent exits.
6. Trust signals are missing
New buyers look for proof: a phone number, a return policy in simple words, real product photos, and "Made in India" or brand details they recognise.
7. English-only words they don't understand
Words like "proceed", "apply coupon" or "billing address" can be unclear. A few simple Hindi or Hinglish labels can help a lot.
8. Shipping cost and delivery date appear too late
Surprises at the final step feel like a trick. Show the total and delivery date early.
9. UPI hand-off fails
Switching to a UPI app and back is a weak point. If the order status is unclear after payment, shoppers worry and sometimes pay twice — or never come back.
